Self-assessment

Am I a candidate for bariatric surgery?

Learn the criteria considered for the surgical treatment of obesity and take a quick, informational self-assessment in a couple of minutes.

Obesity and BMI

A starting point, not a diagnosis

Obesity is an increase in body fat that occurs when the energy consumed consistently exceeds the energy spent. The most widely used indicator to assess the associated risk is the Body Mass Index (BMI), which relates weight to height.

BMI is a useful reference, but it does not tell the whole story: the decision to pursue surgical treatment depends on a comprehensive medical evaluation that considers your clinical history, associated conditions, and goals.

Criteria

Criteria for obesity surgery

The following criteria are generally considered in adults. Every case is different and is always confirmed during consultation.

Based on BMI

  • BMI between 30 and 35 that has not achieved substantial, sustained weight loss with non-surgical methods.
  • BMI between 35 and 40 with an associated condition: diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint problems, among others.
  • BMI greater than 40.

Other factors

  • Living with obesity for several years.
  • Having tried to lose weight with diet and exercise without sustained success.
  • Being willing to make lasting changes to your habits.
  • No dependence on alcohol or substances.
  • Having an acceptable surgical risk.
